Unpacking the lifelong journey of adoption

Hello, and Welcome to My Adoption Story: A Digital Stories Project. In this case we are expounding on adoption as not a mere happy ending, but as a deep, life-long process that defines identity, belonging and family relationships. The project is a personal inquiry on how adoption still affects one in the process of growing up and discovering the self, and its complexity and richness.

The inspiration behind my story

The project was initially a digital storytelling task in one of my Communication courses, which caused me to delve into one of my own stories, one that has strongly shaped who I am. I have always had adoption that has been a major aspect of my life that others do not notice. It was a once in a lifetime chance to take a break, take a look back and express a more personal viewpoint about my own experience as far as the effects adoption has had on me as well as my family.

More than a moment, a lifetime

When you visit, I want you to understand at once that it is my own personal reflection about adoption. I want you to know that the process of adoption is not a one moment, one-dimensional happy conclusion, but a continuous one, that involves identity, family, and a sense of belonging, in a complex interwoven way. I would ask you to read this story with an open mind and compassion, willing to read and understand the complex lives and minds that go into adoption.

Evoking empathy and understanding

In the course of your visit to my project, I would like to make you think further and consider the topic of adoption and the aspects of it. I hope that my desire will be aroused to compassion, empathy, and a strong urge to know how adoption can be a significant influence in forming a personality and a sense of belonging. Finally, I would like to state that adoption is not a one-step procedure, a final stage, but an ongoing process that keeps on defining the life of a person and makes it richer and more profound.

Adoption is a life-long journey of self-discovery, identity, and belonging
